Description

OSCC is looking for an individual to join our pattern shop team. Prior employment in a woodworking field is preferred, however individuals with considerable hobby level woodworking experience are also encouraged to apply. If you have worked as a tool maker, furniture maker,cabinet maker, construction finisher (trim, crown molding, doors/windows,hanging cabinets), or an advanced framer this position would be a good fit. This role works indoors (heated in the winter), offers a regular schedule, overtime is needed semi-regularly (at times up to 55 hours per week).

The equipment required to perform our daily activities includes a band saw, table saw, disc sander, spindle sander, planer, jointer,router, and most typical handheld wood working & measuring tools. Occasionally we will work on a 3-axis mill and standard lathe. The ability to work from shop drawings and sketches is required, we would work closely with you to develop an understanding of our process. This position requires reading and measuring fractions, decimals, and angles. Our primary working materials are wood, but we will work with metal and plastic when needed. The job requires the use of glues/adhesives to assemble larger blocks of wood and to add leather fillets. We use tuf-fil (like automotive bondo) for patching and shaping curved features and filling damaged areas. For very complicated shapes we use pourable tooling plastics and urethanes. Most jobs are much smaller, but equipment sizes may weigh up to 500 lbs and be 50”x65”x 20”, lifting flipping and moving these safely with overhead hoists and pallet jacks is required.

Classification Level A

  • Encompasses all duties, responsibilities, and skills of B & C levels
  • Perform all duties with no supervision
  • Work from 2D and 3D engineering drawings
  • Make patterns in wood and urethane
  • Make master pattern(s) for metal tooling
  • Demonstrates high proficiency in both production and quality
  • Able to independently train others within this position on all classifications listed below

Classification Level B

  • Encompasses all duties, responsibilities, and skills of C level
  • Perform all duties with limited supervision or guidance
  • Ability to build and install rigging using all woodworking and metalworking equipment including mill & lathe
  • Understands and applies shrink factors for different metals
  • Repair broken and damaged pattern equipment
  • Demonstrates proficiency in both production and quality
  • Produce metal gauges and fixtures

Classification Level C

  • Works from sketches or drawings to rig patterns
  • Assists in the repair of broken and damaged pattern equipment
  • Rig new and used patterns and to make engineering/design changes to existing pattern equipment
  • Capable of using a variety of measurement equipment such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and scales
  • Can safely operate variety of wood working machines such as lathes, horizontal mills, planers and jointers, various sanders, etc
  • In addition to woodworking, also works with a variety of metals, plastics, and urethanes
  • Building, mounting, rigging, and set-up of the pattern equipment
  • Requires heavy lifting and extensive use of impact wrenches and drills, both electric and air

Entry Level Qualifications and Requirements

  • Basic math skills
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 100 lbs. repetitively (employees are encouraged to seek assistance when lifting over 50 lbs. and ensure assistance is readily available).
  • Work in or near extremes in temperatures and dusty environment
  • Able to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks in an unsupervised manner
  • High school diploma or its equivalent
  • Must have the ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Must have reliable attendance, willing to work flexible hours, and work well with others
  • Must perform other duties assigned
