Job Position: Safety & Environmental Specialist

DEPARTMENT: OPERATIONS

Wages: Exempt | Shift: Full-Time | Reports to Plant Manager

Position Summary

This position will work closely and under the supervision of the Plant Manager and Human Resources & Safety Manager.  The safety and environmental specialist will assist in maintaining the organization’s safety programs and environmental compliance requirements.  This position will implement, monitor and manage related programs, policies and procedures.

Will assist the company to ensure that the organization complies with all current safety regulations. Will help in the evaluation of the organization’s procedures, facilities, and equipment to identify potential unsafe conditions that need improvement. Will assist to identify and evaluate detrimental working conditions and will make recommendations for adjustments to safeguard employee safety. Will assist in the research and make recommendations on safety equipment.  Will assist in the outlining and implementation of training programs for employee safety procedures and accident protection and prevention.

Coordinates and maintains company policies adhering to local, state and federal environmental regulations. Monitors the company’s compliance plans, procedures and makes environmental recommendations accordingly. Conducts required environmental tests, analysis, and observations. Evaluates results and makes recommendations as necessary for maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies. Ensures compliance with and trains employees on all environmental regulations, and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and distribution of educational materials, inspection of the company’s facilities, equipment and offer recommendations for the corrections or additional precautions to ensure compliance with established regulations
  • Help in creating ways to keep workers and the general public safe from harm
  • Assist in the design of safe workspaces
  • Assists in the coordination and completion of monthly safety inspections and training.
  • Help in the research, development, and implementation of programs to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury.
  • Train and instruct workers on proper and safe working techniques as needed
  • Assist with ongoing safety training programs companywide, as needed, as well as conducting new hire safety training during the new hire onboarding process.
  • File and organize maintenance safety forms for fork trucks, harnesses, slings/chains, cranes, etc.
  • Maintains OSCC’s environmental Federal (EPA), State and local regulatory compliance requirements pertaining to Title 5 Air Operating permit (currently a construction permit), NESHAP Subpart ZZZZ, SPCC, SWPPP and Solid/Liquid Waste Management inclusive to Title 40 CFR
  • Ensures that all applicable environmental requirements are in full compliance with State and Federal laws or employer policies
  • Ensures all documentation and recordkeeping in properly maintained at all times
  • Manages each respective environmental plan in an effective manner that ensures for 100% compliance

Entry Level Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must have High School diploma or GED.
  • Training in Occupational Safety and Environmental Compliance related fields preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a Safety Specialist or Environmental Specialist related role or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Outstanding service orientation; a sense of urgency; high-level of personal integrity.
  • Strong customer service.
  • Must be able to read and write in English and possess good writing skills.
  • Able to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks in an unsupervised manner.
  • Bilingual Skills is a Plus but not required.
  • Ability to work independently, but a strong effective team player mentality is a must.
  • Good judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated capability maintaining strict confidentiality with employee information.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Must have reliable attendance, willing to work flexible hours, & work well with others.
  • Job requires a phone number for contact during possible plant emergencies.
