CAD / Foundry Engineer

Job Position: CAD / Foundry Engineer

DEPARTMENT: TECHNICAL

Wages: Salary | Weekends: Saturday, As Required | Shift: 1st | Reports to Technical Director

Duties, Responsibilities, and Skills

This position will report directly to the technical director but will work closely with team members throughout the company. The CAD/Foundry Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing and improving foundry manufacturing methods and processes. This position assists in maintaining and improving processes and systems that affect the quality of our cast steel products along with objectives that have a direct impact on cost and profit. A key element of the CAD/Foundry Engineer’s job is to provide support to the foundry production floor by troubleshooting problems and effecting timely solutions in order to maintain the continuity of the shop floor process flow.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate Solidworks 3D CAD and MAGMA simulation software.
  • Design all new tooling and communicate design to vendors.
  • Develop CAD for all rigging and gating designs from internal design sketches.
  • Assist with sampling of new work and collecting documentation.
  • Build product data into Odyssey ERP software.
  • Develop process instructions, standard operating procedures, and inspection checklists.
  • Develop and track weekly metrics for the engineering team.
  • Perform dimensional inspection and complete reports, and interpret results
  • Communicate design requirements to internal engineering /sales/operations employees.
  • Interface with Sales to evaluate casting designs and provide cost estimates.
  • Interface with customers and vendors.
  • Build 3D CAD files from customer 2D drawings and rough sketches.

Additional Activities

  • Design rigging and gating designs using both traditional calculations and simulation software.
  • Defect analysis, root cause determination, and implementation of corrective action.
  • Reverse Engineering, develop CAD and drawings starting with only a finished part.
  • Quote pattern equipment, outside services, and customer castings to support sales efforts.
  • Directs and assists shop personnel as needed.
  • Participate in new product development projects.
  • Identify and implement cost reduction projects.
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement techniques

Education & Skills

  • Two years of applicable CAD experience, or recent graduate with CAD and manufacturing experience during college.
  • Manufacturing experience in the areas of molding, core room, melting, pouring and cleaning room operations would be a plus.
  • Skilled MS Office user.  Proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Experience using measurement tools; tape measure, steel rule, calipers, micrometers.
  • Experience operating simulation software is desired.
  • Experience interpreting and applying GD&T is desired.
  • Adept at systematic problem solving, collection and analysis of data, application of statistical methods, DOE, and other quality tools.
  • Must have solid communication skills, conducting themselves professionally.
  • Must have reliable attendance, willing to work flexible hours, & work well with others.
  • Must perform other duties as assigned.
